MLK Day – 2016
Each year, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) leads the volunteerism efforts for Days of Service. Our AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA members are proud participants in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. The Days of Service are opportunities for AmeriCorps members to spearhead volunteering efforts, inspiring other community members to get involved.
During MLK Day of Service 2016, our AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA members partnered with 23 organizations to mobilize 495 volunteers who completed 834 hours of service and 81 projects.
“For MLK Day, 5 TASK VISTAs were able to help organize and itemize the Freestore Foodbank’s onsite client grocery story. We helped over 30 food insecure families procure the necessary food items for their families.” – TASK VISTA member
“Transylvania University hosted a community-wide day of engagement. We started with inviting the entire campus community and the Lexington community to join in the March for Freedom in downtown Lexington. The afternoon continued with 3 hour service slots at 6 different community partners and nonprofit organizations in the surrounding area. The evening concluded with a discussion around an MLK speech regarding youth engagement at local coffee shops.” – TASK VISTA member
“In honor of MLK, we had a guest from a local college come into the classroom to help students complete their FAFSA. Also, I put special effort to let students know that my office door will be open to all who have questions or need help regarding FAFSA completion. This is significant to MLK Day because I want to see students aspire and achieve. By helping, encouraging, and being there for students as they complete their FAFSA, we will hopefully see more students complete it and go on to higher education.” – Kentucky College Coach
