Civic Engagement

Civic engagement is working to make a positive impact on one’s community by identifying and addressing issues of public concern. To embed engagement throughout higher education institutions is at the heart of Campus Compact’s work. Under this broad category are research and other initiatives created to help campuses develop effective service, service-learning, and civic engagement programs.

Democratic Engagement

Democratic engagement is the practice of engaged citizenship (defined as membership in a community) through democratic mechanisms and principles. Politics, and agency within political processes, is a particularly important component of democratic engagement.

Academic Engagement

Kentucky Campus Compact views colleges and universities as vital agents and architects committed to educating students for responsible citizenship in ways that both deepen their education and improve the quality of community life. We challenge all of higher education to make civic and community engagement an institutional priority.

Service-Learning Educator Learning Community

KyCC is excited to offer a yearlong, state-wide Service-Learning Educator Learning Community (ELC)!

This ELC is open to any KyCC member campus faculty (tenured, tenure track, non tenure track and part-time), staff, community partners, AmeriCorps members and/or upper-level students that have a co-educator role. This ELC will meet virtually once per month for 1.5 hours for the 2021-2022 Academic Year. Starting with the Fall 2021 semester, we will determine a time based on participants’ availability.
This ELC is designed to prepare individuals to teach with service learning. We will learn alongside our colleagues from around the state with presentations, discussions, and guest speakers. This ELC will be facilitated by Tori Vogelgesang, Ed.D., MPA. Dr. Vogelgesang is a frequent trainer on service learning at the campus, state/regional and national levels. Topics will include: an introduction to service learning and critical service learning, goals and learning outcomes, critical reflection, assessment, partnerships, logistics, and more. The first semester will focus on the foundation and theory of service learning and the second semester will focus on each participant’s service learning course development.
