Norse Skolars Turns One!
In January 2020, the AmeriCorps Norse Skolars program was a finalist at the Innovation Challenge and was selected and approved for funding and implementation.
Since then, AmeriCorps, Kentucky Campus Compact, Admissions have collaborated to provide services for students who were selected as Norse Skolars. The students are represented from Cincinnati Public Schools and River City/urban schools (Ludlow, Newport, Bellevue, Dayton, Holmes) as well as first-generation and admitted to NKU after May 1st. Some Norse Skolars are participating in various other programs designed to support students at NKU.
Norse Skolars who do not have an affiliation with another program have additional personalized outreach from the Ky College Coach and VISTA. This outreach includes mentoring meetings, assistance with navigating campus, working through obstacles, and connecting to campus programs and resources. Norse Skolars have access to an enhanced network of support that includes individuals who are available to answer questions, encourage, support, and guide them as they navigate their first year.
Percentage of Norse Skolars who enrolled in Fall 2020:
- 428/500 = 85.6% — Summer Melt (the phenomenon in which students are accepted into college, enroll and pay the confirmation fee, but then decide during the summer to not attend the institution)
Last semester:
- The leadership team reached out to all 428 Norse Skolars with personalized phone calls and emails
- 198 Norse Skolars engaged with them through various workshops and activities, tabling on the plaza, individual meetings, phone calls for the start of the fall semester, midterms, and registration
- 96 of these students were not affiliated or connected with any other program on campus
